Identifying coastal sea floor properties using single and multibeam sonar

Multibeam sonar systems are increasingly being used to develop wide-area coverage bathymetric maps of the seabed. In addition to the detailed information on seabed topography multibeam systems provide, valuable information about seafloor properties can also be obtained. Detailed analysis of the acoustic backscatter signals from multibeam acoustic systems is the subject of current international research and development activities aimed at obtaining more information about seafloor properties and benthic habitats from acoustic data. This study will look to develop new techniques for interpretation of multibeam acoustic data, with the aim of optimising the information obtained from the sonar return. Field work will involve acquiring simultaneous single and multibeam data, which will be combined with comprehensive ground truthing data, in the waters of three Australian states. The results will be used to develop and assess benthic habitat classification methods for the Coastal CRC shallow water research program.
