Founded in 1985, the Centre for Marine Science and Technology (CMST) comprises a multi-skilled group of scientists and engineers committed to the development of technical ocean-related skills in Australia. The Centre has earned a reputation as a high-quality marine technology research and development facility responsive to industry and government needs.
Our mission is to serve the current and future needs of our customers (in industry, government, not-for-profit organisations, and the community) through basic as well as applied research and development in our core R&D competency: underwater acoustics.
Our vision is to operate as a Centre of Excellence in marine science and technology that is recognised locally and internationally for the relevance of R&D outputs, the strengths of its strategic alliances, the quality of its graduates, and the responsible and ethical approach it takes to its staff and students.
CMST has expertise in underwater acoustic measurement and modelling, marine soundscapes and ambient noise, marine bioacoustics (mammals, fish, and crustaceans), marine ecology, underwater noise and its impacts on marine life, and marine habitat mapping and modelling.
We also work in terrestrial acoustics, noise, and bioacoustics. We study hearing in animals by anatomical modelling and controlled-exposure experiments, both on land and under water.
We develop and utilise technology from biotelemetry and animal-borne tags, to autonomous underwater acoustic recorders, to distributed acoustic sensing with fibre-optic cables.
We develop software for acoustic analyses from automated signal detection in noise, to beamforming and tracking, to sound propagation modelling.
